Location: Humenné East Slovakia
Humenné, a town in eastern Slovakia, offers more than just scenic views – it hides rare sights, fascinating history, and a touch of culture you might not expect.
The town’s main landmark is the Roman Catholic Church of All Saints, the oldest Franciscan church in the Prešov region. Its roots go back to the 14th century, and what makes it truly unique is the international collaboration of the artists from diverse countries, such as Josef Rifesser, the Austrian sculptor, who crafted the main altar and Mikuláš Klimčák, the Slovak iconographer, who created beautiful stained-glass windows with apostles in Roman Catholic Church. Mikuláš Klimčák (1921–2016), born in Humenné, was a Slovak painter, iconographer, and monumental artist. He graduated from prestigious art schools in Bratislava and Prague. He has created beautiful paintings of the Stations of the Cross in front of the Greek Catholic Church in Humenné.
Several well-known Slovak personalities hail from Humenné, including composer Peter Breiner, the fashion designer Lýdia Eckhardt, world-renowned photographer Yuri Dojc, academic sculptor Jaroslav Drotár and musicians siblings Ľubica and Marián Čekovský.
A walk down Lipová Street will take you to a Greek Catholic church, decorated with Klimčák’s modern frescoes. Nearby, on the outer wall of House of Culture you’ll find a memorial plaque dedicated to Ladislav Grosman, the author of the novella The Shop on Main Street, which inspired to create the only Slovak film which has been awarded an Oscar Prize. The real shop of Mrs. Lautmannová stood right the – next to the general post office in Humenné.
For the lovers of history and nature, the surrounding area features the ruins of Jasenov and Brekov castles. And in the center of town, you’ll find a charming Renaissance manor house which is the seat of the Vihorlatské Museum at present. Its permanent exhibitions include: Historical Interiors, folk kulture of the Zemplín Region, armory, sacred Art, and a unique open-air museum of traditional folk architecture in the manor’s park.
