The Historical Town Hall

The Historical Town Hall

Location: Hlavná Street 59, Košice

At the end of the 13th century, two rich burgher houses stood on the site where the former town hall stands today. Later, the houses were joined together and from the beginning of the 17th century they housed the town hall. The present palace-type building was built between 1779 and 1780 in the Baroque-Classical style. The Košice City Hall used this building until 1928, when it was moved to a new city hall building on Hviezdoslavova Street. From then until 1995 the building was used by the city library. The ground floor of the building also houses a branch of the Municipal Information Centre.
In 1927, the Slovan cinema (now the Capitol) was added to the rear wing of the building. The author of the extension project was the well-known architect Ľudovít Oelschläger from Košice. Currently its premises are used as a cinema for film festivals, but also as a theatre hall.
